MapMe.com - Community mapping
Believe it or not, MAPme.com was first conceived as an R.V. parks map site. We then decided it would be much cooler if people could create their own maps about whatever they wanted by using our mapping tools to create great looking content for their own website/s. We (Rob Rawson, John McCannn and Robin Metcalfe) set about brainstorming and put some ideas down on a wire frame. The next 'big idea' we had was to enable communities of people to create their own maps – we thought this would be especially useful to sport and rec enthusiasts across the board (diving coordinates, surf guides, nature walks, etc). The ability for users to add images, videos and comments also meant that the map content could be fairly dynamic and useful for other purposes as well...
MAPme.com can be used to create anything from travel guides for any entire country, or a detailed view of a specific street. The maps can be personal (and private if required) or community based (where content is moderated) or a complete free for all (where anyone can contribute). Hopefully these various map 'types' will give map creators enough flexibility to adjust the way that other people view and relate to the maps they create.
Other features are on the way, including the ability to add trails and a Facebook Application.
Anyway, with only a relatively small budget and a team of 4-5 people (all working in different locations), and within 5 months, we've managed to put the site together and most parts of it seems to working (fingers crossed). As this is a brand new site, there will inevitabley be teething problems and as always, suggestions, feedback and bug reports are all welcome – Please contact us with your ideas, or if you'd like to submit a bug, please use the ticketing system located here .
We hope you enjoy creating maps about your world.
